About the Earthen Ancestry Series ~ Bones have always fascinated me, and I tend to collect them when I find weathered ones while out exploring in nature. I felt especially moved by the story of La Loba in Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, that tells of a woman who wanders the earth, collecting bones of the wolves to sing life back into them. With this story fresh in my mind, I had been spending time with my parents in Upstate NY, and while exploring the rugged, woodland plot of land they recently acquired, we found numerous skulls and bones from varied wildlife, and at this time I was feeling quite inspired to work their figures into my craft. Thus, this mug series was born! I love to contrast flowers with bones as a representation of the cycles of life.
About the process ~ I use a process called “sgraffito” to make these pieces. It comes from the Italian word “graffiare”, which means “to scratch”. In the context of pottery, I paint a layer of colored slip (or really runny clay) over the base of the mug, and once it dries I “scratch” or carve away that slip layer to create images and patterns. All of my sgraffito pieces are hand carved without stencils which makes each a unique, one-of-a-kind work.
A decently sized mug that holds ~14-16oz. made from brown stoneware clay.
Dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Handmade in Longmont, Colorado with mud and love.
